English Practice Questions for Cycle Test 1

Answer the  the following questions in your Revision Note book.

I. Informal Letter

1. Write a letter to your father from your boarding school, asking him for a reading lamp.
2. Write a letter to your sister thanking her for guiding you for Inter-School Essay Competition.
3. Write a letter to your friend inviting him/her to celebrate a festival with you.
4. Write a letter to your younger brother/sister advising him/her to work harder for exams
5. Write a letter to your cousin congratulating him/her winning State Level Dance Competition.
6. You have recently stayed with an old friend for a few days. Write a letter to that friend about your stay with him/her.

II. Notice Writing

A. Your school is planning to hold a ‘Tree Planting’ day where the Municipal Commissioner of your area will be the Chief Guest. As part of the ‘Environment Club’ you have been asked to put up a notice informing students about the event. Write the notice in about 50 words.

B. Imagine you are a student of St. Theresa School Pune. Your school is planning a ‘Charity Show’ for the benefit of the students of Blind School located in your area. Famous Cine actors will perform at the function. As the Cultural Secretary of your school write a notice asking students to volunteer for Prefect duties on the day of the show. The notice should be in not more than 50 words.

C. Your school is planning to organize a ‘School Sprucing Up’ day where all students would be taking up jobs related to cleaning up the school premises. This is being organized to create a feeling of belongingness as well as appreciating dignity of labour. Write a notice informing students about this activity. You are Rashmi/Rohit the Secretary of the Social Work committee in your school. Write the notice in about 50 words.

D. An NGO by the name SEWA plans to hold classes for children living in hutments outside the city. They need student volunteers for this project. Your Principal has asked you to put up a notice inviting students to join the initiative. Write the notice in not more than 50 words.

E. Your school is organizing a trek to the famous Valley of Flowers in the Himalayas. As the Secretary of the Outstation trip committee you have been asked to put up a notice informing students of classes 7-9 about the trek details in not more than 50 words.

F. You are Ritu/ Mishra, Secretary of The Art Club of Green Field Public School, Mohali. Your school is organising a Debate Competition for the students of classes IX-XII. Write a notice in about 50 words informing the students about the competition. Invent necessary details. Put the notice in the box.

III. Message Writing

A. Sevak is a helper at the office of Mr. Raman. He receives a telephone call from one of the clients who wishes to meet Mr. Raman at 4 p.m. the next day. Since Mr. Raman is not in office, Sevak decides to write a message for him informing him about the meeting. Write the message in about 25 words.
B. Given below is a message which is too long. Rewrite it by omitting the unnecessary information.
I received a phone call from Seema. She told me about her aunt who would be visiting us in the evening. Her aunt has come from Dubai and is here only for 2 days said Seema. She is a good friend of ours. It is already 2p.m and she is likely to come at 7p.m. The reason I am writing this message is to let you know that Seema’s aunt will visit us in the evening. I am going for my cricket coaching and will be back by 6.30p.m.

C. Below is a telephone conversation between John and David. Since
John is leaving for his music class he decides to write a message for Leslie. Write the message innot more than 50 words. Put the message in a box.
 David : Hello! Is it 2323250?
John : Yes, it is.
David : Can I talk to Tom?
John : Sorry, he is not at home. May I know who is on the line
David : I am David, a friend of his.
John : Would you like me to convey a message?
David : Yes. Inform him that the interview scheduled for 5th October has beenpostponed to the 7th. So he can reach Delhi by 6th evening.
John : I will surely convey this message to him.
David : Thank you

D. The following is a telephonic conversation between Venkat and his sister. As Venkat’s sister had to leave for her dance classes, she leaves a message for her mother. Write the message in not more than 50 words.
Venkat: Can I speak to mom?
Veena: She has gone out.
Venkat: I have to leave for Durgapur tomorrow at 4 a.m. for Inter-School Football Match. Please ask her to get my bag packed as I will be back home late in the evening after practice.
Veena: I will.

Diary Writing

1. Write a diary entry on a recent get-together with your cousins.
2. You have recently visited a waterfall on the ourskirts of the city. You had a lot of fun with your family. Write a diary entry describing your feelings.
3. Write a diary entry on the incident in school where you helped your classmate who got injured in sports period.
4. Write a diary entry explaining how you felt when your name is proposed to be the class monitor.
5. Your mother had gone to Delhi on an official trip. Write a diary entry how you are managing at home with your younger brother and attending school regularly.
