Describe Gladys’ idea of an ideal man. Do you think Gladys was selfish in her aspirations?
Gladys’ ideal man would be a harder, sterner man, not so ready to adapt himself to a silly girl’s whim. Above all, he must be a man who could do, who could act, who could look death in the face and have no fear of him, a man of great deeds and strange experiences. It would not be a man whom she loved, but always the glories he had won, for they would be reflected upon her. She was very fascinated with heroism. She wanted some like Richard Burton or like the young Frenchman who went up in a balloon. She also expected someone really brave and humble; who could go down and help the victims of Wigan coal explosion. These ideas speak of Gladys ‘selfishness.

What task does Mr. McArdle assign Malone and why?
Malone asks his boss, McArdle, to send him on a mission preferably one that would have adventure and danger in it. McArdle suggests that Malone expose Professor Challenger of Enmore Park. Professor Challenger was already under court proceedings for striking Blundell, of the Telegraph. He had been to South America on a solitary expedition two years ago and came back last year. He began to tell his adventures in a vague way, but somebody started to pick holes, and he just shut up. Now there was a possibility that either something wonderful happened or the Professor was a champion liar, which was a more probable supposition. Given the adventure and danger exposing this fraud involved, McArdle assigns Malone this task.

Discuss the letter addressed to Malone.
The letter addressed to Malone stated that the professor duly received his note which claimed that he endorsed his views, but the professor was not aware that his views were dependent on any kind of endorsements. It also stated that the word ‘speculation’ that the narrator had used with regards to the professor’s statement upon the subject of Darwinism was offensive to a degree. The professor felt that the narrator has sinned through ignorance and tactlessness so he was content to pass the matter by. The letter asked Malone to show the envelope of the letter to Austin, as he had to take precautions to protect the professor from journalists.
