Q.I

Fill in the blanks.

                             of a layer.

Ans:

opacity

b.

The                                    command will resize the boundaries of a layer to match the image boundaries, without shifting the contents

of that layer with respect to the image.

Ans:

scale layer

format for use on the web.

Q. 2

Answer the following questions in short.

a.

Explain the concept of layers in an image editing software.

Ans:

·         Layers are like a stack of slides placed one over the other.

·         Using layers, you can create an image with different

components,    each    of     which    can    be     independently manipulated without disturbing the other parts.

                              ·         The bottom layer of the image is the background and the components

in the top layer appear above it.

                             ·         A layer should be transparent to allow viewing the images below it or                                              may be opaque.

b.             What is opacity? Why do we use it?

Ans:     ·    The opacity of a layer specifies the extent to which colours from the layers below it can be seen through.

                               ·         In other words, it indicates the degree of transparency of a layer.

                               ·         Opacity values range from 0 to 100, with 0 indicating complete                                                            transparency, and 100 indicating complete opacity.

c.              Differentiate between ‘Scale Layer’ and ‘Layer Boundary Size’ options.

Scale Layer

Layer Boundary Size

i.     It is used to resize the layer and its contents.

i. It is used to change the

dimensions of a layer, but it cannot scale its contents.

Ans:

d.             How will you hide a layer?

Ans:     · You can hide a layer by clicking on the eye symbol before each layer.

e.             What is the file format in which an image is saved in GIMP? When will you save it in the JPEG file format?

Ans: · An image in GIMP is saved in XCF file format.

·      If the image is a photograph that needs to be displayed on a website or a word document, it must be saved in JPEG file format.

f.            What do you mean by a floating layer? Explain with an example.

Ans:     ·    When you paste a clipboard image in GIMP, it creates a floating layer.

             ·         A floating layer must be anchored before you can work on other layers.

             ·         For example: When you want to create an image with a logo, you can open the logo (.png or .gif format) in MS Paint, click Select All and copy it into the clipboard.

                           ·         When you paste it in your GIMP file, the logo from the clipboard gets                                            pasted as a new floating layer in the image you are working on.

g.           What are filters? Give examples.

Ans:       ·      A filter is a tool that applies some special effects to an image.

·            It applies a mathematical algorithm to the image and displays it in a modified form.

·            For example, filters such as

Emboss and Engrave are used to distort an image. Softglow and Waterpixels are used to turn a basic drawing into an artistic sketch.
