Ans) Martin Avdèith, a cobbler, lived in a tiny room with a window in a basement. He had lost his children in infancy, his wife had died too leaving a three year old son. When the boy reached an age when he could help his father, he fell ill and died a week later. Martin wanted to die as well. Now, in his old age, Martin wanted to draw nearer to God. One day a preacher visited him and Martin began to complain about his Sorrows. Then, the old man advised him to live for God. This inspired Martin to read the holy book every day in order to understand how to live for God.

b. How did Martin start living for God after reading the holy book?

Ans) One night, while reading the holy book he slept, and then he heard, "Martin, Martin! look out onto the street tomorrow, I shall come." The next day as he was looking at the street, he saw an old soldier leaning against the wall because he had no strength to clear the snow. So, Martin called him in and served him tea. Then, he saw a woman with worn out to summer clothes struggling to cover her baby. He called her in, and asked her to warm herself near the stove. He also offered her some food, some money, and his old cloak. When an apple woman, caught a boy who stole an apple from her bask basket, he asked her to forgive him. In this way, Martin put into practice the Bible verse, “when I was starving, you gave me food; when I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink; when I was a stranger, you welcomed me”.
